The basic principle is that if you know the time it takes for one heartbeat (the R-R interval), you can easily extrapolate that to find out how many heartbeats occur in one minute (60 seconds).

The formula used is: Heart Rate (beats per minute) = 60 / R-R Interval (in seconds)

For example, if the R-R interval measured on the ECG strip is 0.80 seconds, the calculation would be: Heart Rate = 60 / 0.80 = 75 beats per minute.

This calculator simplifies this process. By inputting the measured R-R interval in seconds, you can quickly obtain the corresponding heart rate in beats per minute. This is a useful tool for quick estimations during a medical assessment or for educational purposes to understand ECG interpretation.

It's important to note that while this method provides an accurate heart rate for a regular rhythm, for irregular rhythms, it's often more appropriate to count the number of QRS complexes within a specific, longer time period (e.g., 6 or 10 seconds) and multiply accordingly to get an average heart rate. However, for a consistent rhythm, the R-R interval method is highly effective.
