How to Calculate Monthly Growth Rate
Understanding the velocity of your business or project is crucial for forecasting and strategy. While seeing a total increase in users, revenue, or traffic is good, knowing the Compounded Monthly Growth Rate (CMGR) tells you exactly how fast you are growing on a consistent monthly basis.
This calculator helps you determine the average monthly performance required to go from your starting point to your ending point over a specific duration.
The Formula for Monthly Growth Rate
To calculate the monthly growth rate (CMGR) when you have a start value, an end value, and a time period greater than one month, we use the compound growth formula rather than a simple average. A simple average often overestimates growth because it ignores the compounding effect.
The CMGR Formula:
Example Calculation
Let's say you run a SaaS company or a newsletter:
- Starting Users (Month 0): 1,000
- Ending Users (Month 6): 2,500
- Duration: 6 Months
Using the formula:
- Divide End by Start: 2,500 / 1,000 = 2.5
- Raise to power of (1/6): 2.5 ^ 0.1666… = 1.16499
- Subtract 1: 1.16499 – 1 = 0.16499
- Multiply by 100 for percentage: 16.50%
This means your user base grew by approximately 16.5% every single month.
Why not just use Simple Average?
If you used a simple average calculation: (Total Growth % / Months), you would calculate 150% / 6 = 25%. This is incorrect for forecasting. If you grew 25% every month for 6 months starting at 1,000, you would end up with nearly 3,800 users, not 2,500.
