What is Instagram Story Engagement Rate?
The Instagram Story Engagement Rate is a metric used to determine how effectively your temporary content resonates with your audience. Unlike feed posts, where likes and comments are the primary drivers, Story engagement is calculated by looking at active interactions relative to the number of people who actually viewed the slide.
The Formula for Story Engagement
To calculate your engagement rate per story, use the following logic:
Engagement Rate = [(Total Interactions) / (Total Story Views)] x 100
Total interactions include replies, shares, link clicks, sticker taps (polls, quizzes, sliders), and profile visits initiated from the story.
Suppose you posted a story that received 1,200 Views. From those views, you received:
– 25 Link Clicks
– 40 Sticker Taps
Total Interactions = 90.
Calculation: (90 / 1,200) * 100 = 7.5% Engagement Rate.
What is a Good Story Engagement Rate?
Benchmarks vary by industry and account size, but generally:
- Under 1%: Low. Content might not be capturing attention or lacks a Call to Action (CTA).
- 1% – 3%: Average. This is standard for many brand accounts.
- 3% – 7%: Good. Your audience is actively participating in your content.
- Above 8%: Excellent. This indicates a highly loyal and responsive community.
How to Increase Your Engagement Rate
1. Use Interactive Stickers: Polls, Sliders, and Quizzes are "low-friction" interactions that boost your stats quickly.
2. Direct Questions: Encourage replies by asking specific questions that matter to your followers.
3. Clear CTAs: If you have a link, tell people exactly why they should click it.
4. Analyze Watch-Through Rate: If views drop significantly from the first slide to the last, your content may be too long or repetitive.
