Reimbursement Summary
Understanding 2024 Per Diem Rates
Per diem is a daily allowance provided to employees for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses (M&IE) incurred during official business travel. For the 2024 fiscal year (October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024), the General Services Administration (GSA) has established standard rates that apply to most locations within the Continental United States (CONUS).
Key 2024 Rate Breakdown
The standard per diem rate for 2024 consists of two primary components:
- Standard Lodging: $107 per night (excluding taxes).
- Standard M&IE: $59 per full day.
It is important to note that many cities (Non-Standard Areas or NSAs) have significantly higher rates based on local costs of living. For example, travel to New York City or San Francisco will yield much higher allowable maximums.
The 75% Rule for Travel Days
According to federal travel regulations, the first and last day of travel are reimbursed at 75% of the applicable M&IE rate. This accounts for the fact that the traveler is likely spending part of those days at home. Our 2024 per diem calculator automatically applies this deduction to ensure your estimates align with standard accounting practices.
How to Use This Calculator
- Check your destination: Look up the specific city on the GSA website to see if it qualifies for an NSA rate. If not, use the standard $107/$59 rates.
- Enter nights vs. days: Remember that lodging is calculated by nights stayed, while meals are calculated by calendar days of travel.
- Adjust for incidentals: The M&IE rate includes tips for porters, baggage carriers, and hotel staff.
Practical Example
If you travel for a 3-night trip (4 travel days) to a standard rate area:
- Lodging: 3 nights x $107 = $321
- M&IE (Day 1 & 4): 2 days x ($59 x 0.75) = $88.50
- M&IE (Day 2 & 3): 2 days x $59 = $118
- Total Reimbursement: $527.50
