Understanding Catch Rates in Gen 7 (Sun & Moon)
Pokémon Gen 7 introduced some subtle changes to the catching mechanics, specifically with the introduction of Roto Catch in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Unlike earlier generations, Gen 7 also has specific modifiers for "Critical Catches" based on how many Pokémon you have already caught in your Pokédex.
The Gen 7 Capture Formula
The core of the capture mechanic is the value "a". This value is calculated using the target's HP, its species' base catch rate, the ball you use, and status conditions. If this value is 255 or higher, the Pokémon is caught instantly. If not, the game performs "shake checks" to determine if the Pokémon breaks free.
- Base Catch Rate: A fixed number per species. Caterpie has 255 (easy), while Necrozma has 255 in USUM (story-based) but Solgaleo/Lunala have 45.
- Status Multipliers:
- Sleep and Freeze: 2.5x
- Paralysis, Burn, and Poison: 1.5x
- HP Factor: Reducing a Pokémon to 1 HP (using moves like False Swipe) nearly triples your catch chance compared to full health.
Common Gen 7 Catch Rates
| Pokémon Type | Base Catch Rate | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Common Starters/Rare | 45 | Rowlet, Litten, Popplio |
| Legendaries | 3 | Tapu Koko, Ultra Beasts |
| Common Wild | 255 | Yungoos, Pikipek |
Pro Tips for Catching in Alola
- Use False Swipe: This move is essential. It leaves the target with 1 HP, maximizing the HP modifier in the formula.
- Roto Catch: If playing Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, always use the Roto Catch power from the Roto-Loto. It provides a significant 1.5x boost to the entire calculation.
- Quick Balls: On the very first turn of a battle, a Quick Ball has a 5x multiplier. This is often better than an Ultra Ball (2x) or even a Dusk Ball (3.5x).
- Timer Balls: If the battle lasts more than 10 turns, the Timer Ball becomes the most effective standard ball with a 4x multiplier.
Note on Beast Balls: In Gen 7, Beast Balls have a 5x multiplier when used on Ultra Beasts, but a 0.1x multiplier on regular Pokémon. Be careful not to waste them on non-UB targets!
