Understanding Revolut's Exchange Rates

Revolut uses the Real Exchange Rate (often called the Interbank rate or Market rate) for most currency exchanges. However, depending on your plan and the timing of the trade, several fees may apply that affect the final amount you receive.

1. The Weekend Markup

Currency markets are closed on weekends (London time). To protect against market fluctuations while the markets are shut, Revolut charges a 1% fixed fee on all currency exchanges made on Saturdays and Sundays. This applies to all users, regardless of their plan (Standard, Premium, or Metal).

2. Fair Usage Limits

If you are on a Standard or Plus plan, there is a monthly limit on how much you can exchange without paying a fair usage fee:

  • Standard: £1,000 per rolling month.
  • Plus: £3,000 per rolling month.
  • Premium, Metal, and Ultra: No exchange limits.

Once you exceed this limit, a 1% fee (for Standard users) or 0.5% fee (for Plus users) is applied to the excess amount.

3. How to Avoid Fees

  • Exchange on Weekdays: Try to perform your currency conversions between Monday and Friday to avoid the 1% weekend markup.
  • Upgrade Your Plan: If you regularly exchange more than £1,000 a month, the Premium or Metal plans may pay for themselves by removing the fair usage fees.
  • Monitor Your Usage: Check your Revolut app profile section to see how much of your monthly allowance is remaining.

Example Calculation

Suppose you are on a Standard Plan and want to exchange £2,000 into EUR on a Saturday, and the market rate is 1.15. You have already used £0 of your limit this month.

  1. Market Conversion: £2,000 * 1.15 = 2,300 EUR.
  2. Weekend Fee: 1% of 2,300 EUR = 23 EUR.
  3. Fair Usage Fee: You are £1,000 over the limit. 1% of the excess (£1,000 * 1.15) = 11.50 EUR.
  4. Total Fees: 34.50 EUR.
  5. Final Amount: 2,265.50 EUR.
