How Much Gravel Do You Need? A Complete Guide
Planning a new driveway, a decorative garden path, or a sturdy patio base requires precise measurements. Ordering too little gravel leads to costly delivery restarts, while ordering too much leaves you with a heavy pile of unused stone. This gravel calculator helps you estimate the exact volume and weight required for your landscaping project.
The Gravel Calculation Formula
To calculate gravel manually, you must first determine the volume of the space in cubic feet and then convert that to cubic yards (which is how most suppliers sell aggregate). Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
- Step 2: Measure the desired depth in inches and divide by 12 to get feet.
- Step 3: Multiply Length × Width × Depth (in feet) to get Total Cubic Feet.
- Step 4: Divide the Cubic Feet by 27 to get Total Cubic Yards.
Example Calculation
Imagine you are building a gravel driveway that is 30 feet long, 10 feet wide, and you want the gravel to be 4 inches deep.
- Convert 4 inches to feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.33 feet.
- Calculate Cubic Feet: 30 × 10 × 0.33 = 99 Cubic Feet.
- Calculate Cubic Yards: 99 ÷ 27 = 3.67 Cubic Yards.
Cubic Yards vs. Tons
While many retailers sell by the "yard," some quarries sell by weight (tons). On average, standard crushed stone or gravel weighs approximately 2,800 lbs per cubic yard, which is 1.4 tons. However, this can vary based on the moisture content and the size of the stone. Our calculator uses the 1.4 multiplier as a standard industry benchmark.
Recommended Depths for Projects
The depth of your gravel depends heavily on the purpose of the area:
| Project Type | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Walking Paths | 2 – 3 Inches |
| Standard Driveway | 4 – 6 Inches |
| Patio Sub-base | 4 Inches |
| Mulch Alternative | 2 Inches |
Pro Tips for Buying Gravel
1. Account for Compaction: When you spread gravel and drive or walk over it, it will settle and compact. It is generally wise to order 5% to 10% more than your calculated amount to account for this settling.
2. Check Delivery Minimums: Most professional aggregate suppliers have a minimum delivery of 1 to 3 tons. If you need less, it may be cheaper to buy bags from a local hardware store, even though the price per pound is significantly higher.
3. Weed Control: Before pouring your gravel, ensure you lay down a high-quality geotextile fabric. This prevents the stone from sinking into the soil and stops weeds from poking through your clean surface.
