The basic mathematical formula used by this calculator is:
Flow Rate (mL/hr) = Total Volume (mL) ÷ Time (hours)
If the prescribed time is in minutes, the formula adjusts to:
Flow Rate (mL/hr) = (Total Volume (mL) ÷ Time (min)) × 60
Practical Examples
- Example 1 (Hours): A physician orders 1,000 mL of Normal Saline to be infused over 8 hours.
Calculation: 1000 / 8 = 125 mL/hr. - Example 2 (Minutes): An antibiotic dose of 100 mL is ordered to be infused over 30 minutes.
