USPS Media Mail Rates Calculator (2024 Estimates)
How USPS Media Mail Rates Are Calculated
Media Mail is a specialized shipping service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) specifically for educational materials and media. It is significantly cheaper than Priority Mail or Ground Advantage but comes with strict rules regarding what can be shipped.
The Calculation Formula
The cost of Media Mail is determined solely by the weight of the package, regardless of the distance it travels within the United States. USPS calculates the price based on whole pounds. If your package weighs 1.2 lbs, you will be charged the 2 lb rate.
- Base Rate (1 lb): $4.13
- Additional Pound Increments: Approximately $0.74 per pound
What Qualifies for Media Mail?
To use this calculator effectively, you must ensure your items are eligible. USPS inspectors are authorized to open and inspect Media Mail packages to ensure they do not contain prohibited items.
| Eligible Items | Prohibited Items |
|---|---|
| Books (at least 8 pages) | Video Games |
| Sound recordings (CDs/Vinyl) | Computer Drives/Software |
| Printed Music & Manuscripts | Digital Cameras/Equipment |
| Recorded Video Tapes/DVDs | Advertising/Catalogs |
Example Calculation
If you are shipping a box of hardcover books that weighs 12.4 pounds:
- Round up: 12.4 lbs becomes 13 lbs.
- First pound: $4.13.
- Remaining 12 pounds: 12 x $0.74 = $8.88.
- Total: $4.13 + $8.88 = $13.01.
Important Shipping Tips
- No Advertising: If your book contains advertisements (even old ones in comic books), it may be disqualified from Media Mail rates.
- Delivery Time: Media Mail is "economy" shipping. It typically takes 2 to 8 business days, though it can take longer during peak seasons.
- Free Tracking: Standard Media Mail includes USPS Tracking at no additional cost when purchased at the counter or online.
- Weight Limit: Ensure your package does not exceed 70 lbs, as it will be rejected or returned.
