Understanding the Parlay Odds Calculator
A parlay bet, often referred to as an "accumulator" or "multi-bet," is a single sports wager that involves linking two or more individual bets together. To win the parlay, every single individual "leg" or component of the bet must win. If even one leg loses, the entire parlay is graded as a loss.
How Parlay Odds Are Calculated
The math behind a parlay is exponential, which is why the payouts can be so significant. The process involves three main steps:
- Convert to Decimal: Since American odds (e.g., -110, +150) are difficult to multiply directly, they are first converted to decimal odds.
- Multiplication: All the decimal odds of the individual legs are multiplied together to create the "Total Multiplier."
- Calculate Payout: Your stake (the amount you bet) is multiplied by that total multiplier to determine the total payout.
American Odds Conversion Rules
In our calculator, we use the standard conversion formulas used by sportsbooks:
- Positive Odds (+): (Odds / 100) + 1. For example, +200 becomes 3.00.
- Negative Odds (-): (100 / Odds) + 1. For example, -110 becomes 1.91.
Example Parlay Calculation
Let's say you want to bet $100 on a 3-leg parlay with the following odds:
- Leg 1: -110 (Decimal 1.91)
- Leg 2: +150 (Decimal 2.50)
- Leg 3: -120 (Decimal 1.83)
Step 1: Multiply the decimals: 1.91 × 2.50 × 1.83 = 8.74 (Total Odds).
Step 2: Multiply by your stake: $100 × 8.74 = $874.00 total payout.
Step 3: Subtract your original stake to find the profit: $874 – $100 = $774.00 profit.
Why Use a Parlay Calculator?
While parlays are high-risk, they offer a way to turn a small amount of money into a large sum. Using a calculator helps you understand the "Implied Probability" of your bet. In the example above, the implied probability of winning that 3-leg parlay is roughly 11.4%. Knowing this helps bettors manage their bankroll more effectively and compare potential returns across different sportsbooks.
