How to Use the Roofing Square Calculator

Calculating the amount of material needed for a new roof can be daunting. In the roofing industry, the standard unit of measurement is a "square." One roofing square is equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. This calculator helps you determine how many squares of shingles, underlayment, and drip edge you need based on your home's footprint and roof pitch.

Understanding Roof Pitch and Multipliers

Because most roofs are not flat, you cannot simply use the ground-level square footage of the house. The steeper the roof, the more surface area it has. This is where the Roof Pitch Multiplier comes in. Our calculator uses standard pitch ratios (vertical rise over 12 inches of horizontal run) to determine the exact surface area.

  • Low Pitch (2:12 – 4:12): Common for ranch-style homes. Requires less material.
  • Standard Pitch (6:12 – 9:12): The most common residential roof slopes.
  • High Pitch (10:12+): Very steep roofs, often found on Victorian or Tudor-style homes.

The Importance of the Waste Factor

No roofing project uses exactly the amount of shingles calculated. You must account for "waste" caused by cutting shingles to fit valleys, hips, and ridges. A standard rule of thumb is:

  • 10%: For simple gable roofs with few obstructions.
  • 15%: For hip roofs or roofs with chimneys and dormers.
  • 20%: For complex roof designs with multiple valleys and steep angles.

Example Calculation

Suppose you have a house that is 40 feet long and 30 feet wide with a standard 6:12 pitch and a 10% waste factor:

  1. Base Area: 40 ft x 30 ft = 1,200 sq. ft.
  2. Pitch Adjustment: A 6:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118. (1,200 x 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq. ft.)
  3. Include Waste: 1,341.6 x 1.10 = 1,475.76 sq. ft.
  4. Convert to Squares: 1,475.76 / 100 = 14.76 Squares.

Since most shingles are sold in bundles (typically 3 bundles per square), you would need to purchase 45 bundles of shingles for this project.

Common Roofing Terms

Bundle: A package of shingles. Usually, 3 bundles cover 1 square (100 sq. ft.).

Square: The professional unit for 100 square feet of roofing area.

Eave: The lower edge of the roof that overhangs the walls.

Ridge: The highest horizontal point where two roof planes meet.
