USGA Handicap Index Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate your USGA Handicap Index based on the World Handicap System (WHS) rules. Enter your most recent Adjusted Gross Scores, along with the Course Rating and Slope Rating for each round played. The calculator will automatically select the required number of best differentials to determine your Handicap Index.

Understanding Your USGA Handicap Index
The USGA Handicap Index is a numerical measure of a golfer's demonstrated ability relative to the difficulty of the courses they play. It allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other. The World Handicap System (WHS), adopted by the USGA, provides a consistent method for calculating handicaps globally.
Key Components of the Handicap Calculation:
- Adjusted Gross Score: This is your raw score for a round, adjusted for any exceptionally high scores on individual holes. Under the WHS, a player's maximum score for any hole is a Net Double Bogey. This adjustment ensures that one or two bad holes don't disproportionately affect your Handicap Index. For this calculator, please input your score after applying this adjustment.
- Course Rating: This is a numerical evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for a scratch golfer (a golfer who can play to a Course Handicap of zero on any and all rated golf courses). It's expressed in strokes to one decimal place (e.g., 72.0).
- Slope Rating: This indicates the relative difficulty of a course for a bogey golfer (a golfer with a Course Handicap of approximately 20-24) compared to a scratch golfer. It ranges from 55 to 155, with 113 being the standard. The higher the Slope Rating, the more difficult the course is for a bogey golfer.
- Score Differential: This is the core calculation for each round played. It normalizes your score based on the course's difficulty. The formula is:
Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC Adjustment) × 113 / Slope Rating
The Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) is an automated adjustment that accounts for abnormal course or weather conditions. For simplicity, this calculator assumes a PCC adjustment of 0.
How Your Handicap Index is Calculated:
To establish a Handicap Index, you need a minimum of three 18-hole scores (or six 9-hole scores combined into three 18-hole equivalents). Once you have 20 scores, your Handicap Index is calculated using the average of your best 10 Score Differentials from your most recent 20 scores.
The process involves these steps:
- Calculate Score Differentials: For each eligible round, a Score Differential is calculated using the formula above.
- Select Best Differentials: The system looks at your most recent Score Differentials and selects a certain number of your lowest (best) differentials based on how many scores you have submitted:
- 3-5 scores: Use the lowest 1 differential.
- 6-7 scores: Use the lowest 2 differentials.
- 8-10 scores: Use the lowest 3 differentials.
- 11-12 scores: Use the lowest 4 differentials.
- 13-14 scores: Use the lowest 5 differentials.
- 15 scores: Use the lowest 6 differentials.
- 16 scores: Use the lowest 7 differentials.
- 17 scores: Use the lowest 8 differentials.
- 18-19 scores: Use the lowest 9 differentials.
- 20 or more scores: Use the lowest 10 differentials.
- Average the Selected Differentials: The selected lowest differentials are averaged.
- Apply the Handicap Factor: This average is then multiplied by a factor of 0.96 (a bonus for playing well) and truncated to one decimal place to become your Handicap Index.
Example Calculation:
Let's say a golfer has 5 recent Adjusted Gross Scores with their respective Course and Slope Ratings:
- Score: 85, Course Rating: 72.0, Slope Rating: 130 → Score Differential = (85 – 72.0) × 113 / 130 = 11.3
- Score: 82, Course Rating: 71.5, Slope Rating: 128 → Score Differential = (82 – 71.5) × 113 / 128 = 9.27
- Score: 88, Course Rating: 73.2, Slope Rating: 135 → Score Differential = (88 – 73.2) × 113 / 135 = 12.38
- Score: 80, Course Rating: 70.8, Slope Rating: 125 → Score Differential = (80 – 70.8) × 113 / 125 = 8.31
- Score: 83, Course Rating: 71.0, Slope Rating: 129 → Score Differential = (83 – 71.0) × 113 / 129 = 10.51
The calculated Score Differentials are: [11.3, 9.27, 12.38, 8.31, 10.51].
Sorted from lowest to highest: [8.31, 9.27, 10.51, 11.3, 12.38].
Since there are 5 scores, the lowest 1 differential is used: 8.31.
Average of lowest differentials: 8.31
Handicap Index = 8.31 × 0.96 = 7.9776
Truncated to one decimal place, the Handicap Index is 7.9.
