GPA Calculator
Use this calculator to determine your Grade Point Average (GPA) by entering your course credits and corresponding letter grades.
Understanding Your GPA
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a widely used indicator of your academic performance. It's a numerical average of the grades you receive in all your courses, weighted by the number of credits each course carries.
How is GPA Calculated?
The calculation of GPA involves two main steps:
- Assign Grade Points: Each letter grade is assigned a specific numerical value, known as grade points. While scales can vary slightly by institution, a common scale is:
- A = 4.0 points
- B = 3.0 points
- C = 2.0 points
- D = 1.0 points
- F = 0.0 points
- Calculate Weighted Average: For each course, multiply the grade points by the number of credits for that course. Sum these values for all courses to get the total grade points. Then, divide the total grade points by the total number of credits attempted.
GPA = (Sum of [Grade Points × Credits] for all courses) / (Sum of Total Credits)
Why is GPA Important?
GPA is crucial for several reasons:
- Academic Standing: Many educational institutions use GPA to determine academic standing, eligibility for honors, and graduation requirements.
- Scholarships and Financial Aid: A strong GPA is often a prerequisite for scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance.
- Graduate School Admissions: Graduate and professional schools heavily weigh an applicant's undergraduate GPA during the admissions process.
- Employment Opportunities: Some employers, especially for entry-level positions, may consider GPA as an indicator of a candidate's diligence and capability.
Using the GPA Calculator
Our GPA calculator simplifies this process for you:

Example Calculation:
Let's say a student has the following grades:
- Course 1: 3 Credits, Grade A (4.0 points)
- Course 2: 4 Credits, Grade B (3.0 points)
- Course 3: 3 Credits, Grade C (2.0 points)
Step 1: Calculate Grade Points for each course:
- Course 1: 4.0 (points) × 3 (credits) = 12.0
- Course 2: 3.0 (points) × 4 (credits) = 12.0
- Course 3: 2.0 (points) × 3 (credits) = 6.0
Step 2: Sum Total Grade Points:
12.0 + 12.0 + 6.0 = 30.0
Step 3: Sum Total Credits:
3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Step 4: Calculate GPA:
GPA = 30.0 / 10 = 3.0
The student's GPA is 3.0.
