Calculation Logic Explained
The calculator works by converting all time inputs into a common unit, typically minutes, for easier arithmetic. Here's a simplified breakdown:
- Convert Start and End Times to Minutes: Each hour is multiplied by 60 and added to its respective minutes.
- Handle Overnight Shifts: If the end time is numerically smaller than the start time (e.g., starting at 10 PM and ending at 6 AM), the calculator assumes the end time is on the following day and adds 24 hours (1440 minutes) to the end time's minute value.
- Calculate Gross Duration: The start time in minutes is subtracted from the (adjusted) end time in minutes.
- Subtract Breaks: The total break duration (also converted to minutes) is subtracted from the gross duration.
- Convert Back to Hours and Minutes: The final total minutes are then divided by 60 to get the full hours, and the remainder gives the minutes. A decimal representation is also provided for convenience.
