How to Use the Baseboard Calculator
Replacing baseboards is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a room. To get an accurate estimate of the material you need, follow these steps:
- Measure the Room: Input the length and width of the room in feet. If your room is L-shaped, divide it into two rectangles and calculate them separately.
- Accounting for Openings: Enter the number of doors or floor-length windows where the baseboard will not run. A standard interior door is usually 30 to 36 inches wide.
- The Waste Factor: We recommend at least a 10% waste factor. This accounts for miter cuts, corner errors, and the ends of boards that might be damaged.
- Cost Estimation: Enter the price per linear foot. Common MDF baseboards cost between $0.80 – $1.50, while solid wood or primed finger-jointed pine can range from $2.00 to $5.00+ per foot.
Baseboard Material Comparison
| Material | Durability | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) | Low (Moisture Sensitive) | Budget renovations, paint-grade finish. |
| Finger-Jointed Pine | Medium | Standard residential builds, very stable. |
| Solid Hardwood (Oak/Walnut) | High | High-end homes, stain-grade finish. |
Practical Example Calculation
Imagine a room that is 15 feet long and 10 feet wide with two 32-inch doors:
- Gross Perimeter: (15 + 10) * 2 = 50 feet.
- Door Deductions: 2 doors * 32 inches = 64 inches (approx 5.33 feet).
- Net Linear Feet: 50 – 5.33 = 44.67 feet.
- With 10% Waste: 44.67 * 1.10 = 49.14 feet.
- Total to Purchase: You would likely buy 50 linear feet or five 10-foot boards.
