The Last Menstrual Period (LMP) Method
The most common method for estimating conception and due dates relies on the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). This might seem counterintuitive, as conception occurs weeks after your period starts. However, because ovulation and subsequent conception typically happen around the middle of a woman's menstrual cycle, the LMP provides a consistent starting point for calculations.
- Average Cycle Length: A typical menstrual cycle is 28 days.
- Ovulation: In a 28-day cycle, ovulation usually occurs around day 14.
- Conception Window: Conception is most likely to occur within 12-24 hours after ovulation.
Therefore, the estimated conception date is generally considered to be approximately 14 days after the first day of your LMP.
Calculating the Estimated Due Date (EDD)
Once the LMP is known, the Estimated Due Date (EDD) can be calculated using Naegele's Rule. This rule states that the EDD is 280 days (or 40 weeks) from the first day of the LMP. This 40-week period accounts for the approximately two weeks between LMP and conception, plus the 38 weeks of actual fetal development.
