What is a Paycheck Calculator?

Key Components of Your Paycheck Explained:
1. Gross Pay per Pay Period
This is your total earnings before any deductions or taxes are taken out for a specific pay period. If you're salaried, it's your annual salary divided by your pay frequency. If you're hourly, it's your hourly rate multiplied by the hours worked in that period.
2. Pay Frequency
This refers to how often you get paid. Common frequencies include:
- Weekly: 52 paychecks per year
- Bi-Weekly: Every two weeks, resulting in 26 paychecks per year
- Semi-Monthly: Twice a month (e.g., 15th and 30th), resulting in 24 paychecks per year
- Monthly: Once a month, resulting in 12 paychecks per year
3. Federal Income Tax Withholding Rate
This is the amount of federal income tax withheld from your paycheck. It's based on the information you provide on your W-4 form (filing status, dependents, other adjustments). Our calculator uses a percentage for simplification, allowing you to estimate based on your expected tax bracket or previous pay stubs.
4. State Income Tax Withholding Rate
Similar to federal tax, this is the amount of state income tax withheld. Not all states have income tax, so this rate might be 0% depending on where you live. Like federal tax, our calculator uses a percentage for ease of use.
5. Social Security Tax (FICA – OASDI)
This is part of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax. It funds Social Security benefits for retirees, disabled workers, and survivors. The current rate is 6.2% of your taxable gross pay, up to an annual wage base limit (e.g., $168,600 for 2024). Once your year-to-date earnings exceed this limit, Social Security tax is no longer withheld for the remainder of the year.
6. Medicare Tax (FICA – HI)
Also part of FICA, Medicare tax funds hospital insurance for the elderly and disabled. The current rate is 1.45% of your taxable gross pay, with no wage base limit. There's also an additional Medicare tax for high earners, but our basic calculator does not include this.

- It subtracts your Pre-Tax Deductions to arrive at your Taxable Gross Pay.
- It calculates Social Security Tax (6.2% of taxable gross) and Medicare Tax (1.45% of taxable gross).
- It calculates Federal Income Tax and State Income Tax based on your specified rates and taxable gross pay.
- All these taxes are summed up to get your Total Taxes.
- Finally, it subtracts the Total Taxes and any Post-Tax Deductions from your Gross Pay per Pay Period to give you your final Net Pay.
