Understanding New York State Income Tax Brackets
New York State has a progressive income tax system, meaning that higher earners pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes. The tax rates are applied to different portions (brackets) of your taxable income. This calculator helps you estimate your New York State income tax liability based on your reported annual income and filing status.
It's important to note that this calculator estimates your tax based on New York State's personal income tax rates. It does not include any potential deductions, credits, or New York City/Yonkers local income taxes, which can significantly affect your final tax bill. Always consult with a qualified tax professional for personalized advice.
How New York State Income Tax Works
New York State income tax is calculated by applying specific tax rates to different income tiers, known as tax brackets. The structure of these brackets and the corresponding tax rates depend on your filing status. The progressive nature ensures that each additional dollar earned is taxed at a higher rate than the previous dollar, up to a certain point.

How the Calculator Works
The calculator takes your annual income and filing status and applies the corresponding New York State tax brackets. It calculates the tax owed for each portion of your income that falls into a specific bracket and sums these amounts to provide an estimated total tax liability.
Example Calculation (Single Filer):
If a single individual has an annual income of $75,000:
The first $11,700 is taxed at 4.00% = $468.00
The income between $11,701 and $27,900 ($16,200) is taxed at 4.50% = $729.00
The income between $27,901 and $41,950 ($14,050) is taxed at 5.05% = $709.53
The income between $41,951 and $54,150 ($12,200) is taxed at 5.50% = $671.00
The remaining income from $54,151 up to $75,000 ($20,850) is taxed at 6.25% = $1,303.13
This is a simplified example. Actual tax calculation might involve deductions and credits.
