- Company Policy & State Laws: Some states mandate PTO payout, while others leave it to employer discretion. Many companies have explicit policies in their employee handbooks detailing how PTO is handled upon separation.
- Payout Percentage: Not all accrued PTO might be paid out. Some policies might only pay out a certain percentage of the unused balance, or have caps on the total amount. For example, if your company policy states 100% payout, you'll be paid for all accrued hours. If it's 50%, you'll receive half the value.

Estimated PTO Payout = (Accrued PTO Hours) * (Hourly Rate) * (PTO Payout Percentage / 100)
For example, if you have 80 hours of accrued PTO, your hourly rate is $25.50, and your employer's policy is to pay out 100% of unused PTO, the calculation would be:
80 hours * $25.50/hour * (100 / 100) = $2040.00
If the policy was to pay out only 75% of unused PTO, the calculation would be:
80 hours * $25.50/hour * (75 / 100) = $1530.00

- Salaried Employees: If you are a salaried employee, you'll need to determine your effective hourly rate. A common method is to divide your annual salary by 2080 (assuming a standard 40-hour work week).

- Accrual Caps: Some companies have limits on how much PTO employees can accrue. Check if your accrued hours exceed any such caps.
