American Airlines AAdvantage Mileage Calculator
How American Airlines Mileage Accrual Works
Since 2016, American Airlines AAdvantage miles are earned based on the price of the ticket rather than the physical distance flown. For most flights marketed and operated by American Airlines, you earn 5 base miles for every U.S. dollar spent on the ticket fare, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees.
Earnings Based on Elite Status
Your AAdvantage status significantly boosts your earning potential. The higher your tier, the more bonus miles you receive for every dollar spent:
- AAdvantage Member: 5 miles per $1 spent
- Gold: 7 miles per $1 spent (40% bonus)
- Platinum: 8 miles per $1 spent (60% bonus)
- Platinum Pro: 9 miles per $1 spent (80% bonus)
- Executive Platinum: 11 miles per $1 spent (120% bonus)
What are Loyalty Points?
Introduced in 2022, Loyalty Points are the metric American Airlines uses to track status qualification. Generally, you earn 1 Loyalty Point for every 1 base mile earned from flying. Bonus miles earned from your status level also count toward Loyalty Points, making it faster for elite members to maintain or upgrade their status.
Example Calculation
If you are a Platinum Member and purchase a flight with a base fare of $500 (excluding taxes):
- Base Rate: 5 miles per $1 = 2,500 Miles
- Status Bonus: 60% of 2,500 = 1,500 Miles
- Total: 4,000 Reward Miles and 4,000 Loyalty Points.
AAdvantage Credit Card Bonus
While credit card spending doesn't typically multiply your Loyalty Points for the flight itself, the miles earned directly from the purchase on your card statement provide an extra layer of rewards. Most AAdvantage cards offer 2x miles per $1 spent on American Airlines purchases.
