How to Use the American Airlines Points Calculator
Understanding how many miles you earn on an American Airlines flight can be complex since the transition to a revenue-based system. This calculator helps you estimate both your Award Miles (used to book free flights) and your Loyalty Points (used to reach elite status levels).
Earnings Breakdown by Status
American Airlines rewards its most frequent flyers with higher multipliers. The amount of miles you earn per dollar spent on the base fare (excluding taxes) depends entirely on your status level at the time of travel:
- Basic Member: 5 miles per $1 spent
- Gold Status: 7 miles per $1 spent (40% bonus)
- Platinum Status: 8 miles per $1 spent (60% bonus)
- Platinum Pro Status: 9 miles per $1 spent (80% bonus)
- Executive Platinum Status: 11 miles per $1 spent (120% bonus)
Award Miles vs. Loyalty Points
Since 2022, American Airlines simplified the AAdvantage program. Generally, every base mile earned from flying also counts as one Loyalty Point. Additionally, spending on an AAdvantage co-branded credit card usually yields 1 Loyalty Point per eligible dollar spent.
Real-World Example
Imagine you are an AAdvantage Platinum member booking a flight with a base fare of $500 (plus $80 in taxes). You also spend $200 on your AA credit card for the month.
- Flight Miles: $500 x 8 = 4,000 miles.
- Credit Card Miles: $200 x 1 = 200 miles.
- Total Award Miles: 4,200 miles.
- Total Loyalty Points: 4,200 points.
