Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic life-sustaining functions at rest. These functions include breathing, circulation, cell production, nutrient processing, protein synthesis, and ion transport. Essentially, it's the energy your body expends just to keep you alive if you were to do absolutely nothing all day.
Understanding your BMR is crucial for managing your weight and overall health. If your calorie intake consistently exceeds your BMR, you'll likely gain weight. Conversely, if you consume fewer calories than your BMR, you'll lose weight. However, it's also important to consider your activity level, as this significantly impacts your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which is your BMR plus the calories burned through physical activity.
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is widely considered one of the most accurate formulas for estimating BMR:
- For men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) + 5
- For women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) – 161
