Understanding PC Bottlenecks
A PC bottleneck occurs when one component limits the potential performance of other hardware in the system. In gaming, this usually refers to the relationship between the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). If one component is significantly weaker than the other, the faster component will "wait" for the slower one to finish its tasks, leading to lower frames per second (FPS) or stuttering.

To use this tool, input a performance score for your CPU and GPU relative to current market standards (where 100 represents top-tier flagship hardware). Select your intended resolution and workload type. The calculator uses a weighted algorithm to determine which component is likely to hit 100% utilization first.
Types of Bottlenecks
- CPU Bottleneck: Occurs when the processor cannot prepare frame data fast enough for the GPU. This is common at lower resolutions (1080p) or in high-refresh-rate gaming.
- GPU Bottleneck: Occurs when the graphics card is fully utilized while the CPU sits idle. This is often the "ideal" bottleneck in modern AAA gaming, especially at 4K resolution.
Example Scenarios
Scenario 1: An Intel Core i9-13900K paired with a GT 1030 at 1080p. Result: Severe GPU Bottleneck (over 80%). The CPU is overkill for such a weak card.
Scenario 2: An old Core i3-6100 paired with an RTX 4090 at 1080p. Result: Massive CPU Bottleneck. The GPU will never reach its potential because the CPU cannot keep up.
