How to Calculate Roofing Squares

In the roofing industry, materials are measured in "squares." One square of roofing is the amount of material required to cover 100 square feet of roof surface. Estimating a roof is more complex than a standard floor because you must account for the roof pitch (the steepness) and waste.

Step 1: Calculate the Base Area

Start by measuring the footprint of your home. If your house is a simple rectangle of 50 feet by 30 feet, your base area is 1,500 square feet. However, this is only the flat area; it doesn't account for the slope.

Step 2: Apply the Pitch Factor

The steeper the roof, the more surface area it has. A 4/12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. In our calculator, we use the following standard multipliers:

  • 4/12 Pitch: multiply flat area by 1.054
  • 6/12 Pitch: multiply flat area by 1.118
  • 8/12 Pitch: multiply flat area by 1.202
  • 12/12 Pitch: multiply flat area by 1.414

Step 3: Account for Waste

No roofing project uses exactly the amount of shingles measured. You must cut shingles to fit valleys, hips, and gables.

  • Simple Gable Roof: 10% waste factor.
  • Hip Roof: 15% waste factor.
  • Complex Roof (multiple dormers/valleys): 20% waste factor.

Example Calculation

Imagine a house 40ft x 30ft (1,200 sq. ft. base) with a 6/12 pitch and a 10% waste factor:

  1. Base Area: 40 x 30 = 1,200 sq. ft.
  2. Slope Adjustment: 1,200 x 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq. ft.
  3. Add Waste: 1,341.6 x 1.10 = 1,475.76 sq. ft.
  4. Convert to Squares: 1,475.76 / 100 = 14.76 Squares.

Average Cost per Square

The total cost of your roofing project varies wildly based on material choice:

Material Est. Cost per Square
3-Tab Asphalt Shingles $350 – $450
Architectural Shingles $450 – $700
Metal Roofing $800 – $1,200
Slate or Tile $1,000 – $2,500+
