Understanding the ACT Composite Score
The ACT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. It assesses a student's general educational development and their readiness for college-level work. The ACT consists of four multiple-choice sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, plus an optional Writing Test.
How the ACT Composite Score is Calculated
Your ACT composite score is the average of your scores from the four multiple-choice sections. Each of the four sections is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. Your raw score (the number of questions you answer correctly) for each section is converted into a scaled score. The highest possible scaled score is 36, and the lowest is 1.
The calculation of the composite score involves the following steps:
Section 1 Scaled Score (e.g., English) = SE
Section 2 Scaled Score (e.g., Math) = SM
Section 3 Scaled Score (e.g., Reading) = SR
Section 4 Scaled Score (e.g., Science) = SS
Sum of Section Scores = SE + SM + SR + SS
Raw Composite Score = (Sum of Section Scores) / 4
The ACT's official scoring process then rounds this raw composite score to the nearest whole number. This means if your raw composite score is, for example, 25.25, it will be rounded down to 25. If it's 25.75, it will be rounded up to 26. A score of 25.5 is typically rounded up to 26.
