Calipers Body Fat Calculator
This calculator estimates your body fat percentage using the Jackson & Pollock 3-site or 4-site skinfold method.
Your Estimated Body Fat:
—%Understanding the Calipers Body Fat Calculation
Body fat percentage is a measure of how much of your total body weight is composed of fat. It's a more accurate indicator of health and fitness than simple body weight alone. Skinfold calipers are a common tool used to estimate body fat by measuring the thickness of subcutaneous fat (fat directly under the skin) at specific anatomical sites.
The Jackson & Pollock Method
This calculator utilizes the widely respected Jackson & Pollock skinfold equations. These equations are based on extensive research correlating skinfold measurements with more direct measures of body fat (like hydrostatic weighing). The method involves taking measurements at specific sites on the body, summing them up, and then using a derived formula that incorporates age and gender to estimate body density, which is then converted into body fat percentage.
Commonly Used Sites and Formulas:
- Male Sites (3-Site): Chest, Abdomen, Thigh
- Male Sites (4-Site): Chest, Abdomen, Thigh, Triceps (optional addition for some variations)
- Female Sites (3-Site): Triceps, Suprailiac (iliac crest), Thigh
- Female Sites (4-Site): Triceps, Suprailiac (iliac crest), Thigh, Calf (optional addition for some variations)
The general steps in the calculation are:
- Measure skinfolds in millimeters (mm) using calipers at the specified sites.
- Sum the skinfold measurements.
- Input the sum, along with your age and gender, into the appropriate Jackson & Pollock formula.
- Calculate Body Density (BD) using the formula specific to gender and site count.
- Convert Body Density to Body Fat Percentage (%) using the Siri or Brozek equation.
Formulas Used (Commonly Siri Equation):
For Males:
- 3-Site (Chest, Abdomen, Thigh):
- Sum = Chest + Abdomen + Thigh
- BD = 1.10938 – (0.0008267 * Sum) + (0.0000016 * Sum^2) – (0.00025753 * Age)
- 4-Site (Chest, Abdomen, Thigh, Triceps – less common standard): Some variations exist; this calculator uses standard 3-site for simplicity unless a 4th site is explicitly entered and the formula adjusted. The most common 4-site for males is Chest, Abdomen, Thigh, Triceps. The calculation would adapt similarly.
For Females:
- 3-Site (Triceps, Suprailiac, Thigh):
- Sum = Triceps + Suprailiac + Thigh
- BD = 1.0994921 – (0.0009929 * Sum) + (0.0000023 * Sum^2) – (0.0001372 * Age)
- 4-Site (Triceps, Suprailiac, Thigh, Calf – less common standard): Similar to males, specific 4-site formulas exist and would adapt the calculation.
Conversion to Body Fat Percentage (%):
- Body Fat % (Siri Equation) = (495 / BD) – 450
- Body Fat % (Brozek Equation) = (457 / BD) – 414.2
*This calculator primarily uses the Siri equation, which is common.*
Interpreting Your Results:
Body fat percentages can be categorized. Generally:
- Athletes: Men (6-13%), Women (14-20%)
- Fitness: Men (14-17%), Women (21-24%)
- Average: Men (18-24%), Women (25-31%)
- Obese: Men (25%+), Women (32%+)
Important Considerations:
- Accuracy: Skinfold measurements are highly dependent on the skill of the person taking the measurements. Consistent technique is crucial.
- Hydration: Hydration levels can affect skinfold measurements.
- Site Selection: Ensure measurements are taken at the correct anatomical landmarks.
- Method: This calculator assumes the Jackson & Pollock methodology. Other methods exist.
- Professional Advice: Consult a healthcare professional or certified trainer for personalized health and fitness advice.
