Understanding the D9 (Navamsha) Chart

In Vedic Astrology, the D9 Chart or Navamsha is the most important divisional chart. While the D1 (Birth Chart) shows the physical existence and external circumstances, the D9 reveals the internal strength and the "fruit" of the planets. It is traditionally used to analyze marriage, spiritual progress, and the hidden potential of a person.

How the Calculation Works

Every zodiac sign (30°) is divided into 9 equal parts called "Navamshas." Each part is exactly 3 degrees and 20 minutes (3° 20′). This division creates a total of 108 divisions in the 360° zodiac, corresponding to the 108 Padas of the 27 Nakshatras.

  • Movable Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): The Navamsha starts from the sign itself.
  • Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): The Navamsha starts from the 9th sign from itself.
  • Dual Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): The Navamsha starts from the 5th sign from itself.

Importance of Vargottama

If a planet occupies the same sign in both the D1 and D9 charts, it is called Vargottama. This is a highly auspicious state where the planet gains immense strength to produce positive results, regardless of its house placement.

function calculateNavamsha() { var signInput = document.getElementById("planetSign").value; var degreeInput = document.getElementById("planetDegree").value; var resultDiv = document.getElementById("d9-result"); var output = document.getElementById("navamshaOutput"); var info = document.getElementById("additionalInfo"); var signIndex = parseInt(signInput); var degree = parseFloat(degreeInput); if (isNaN(degree) || degree = 30) { alert("Please enter a valid degree between 0 and 29.99"); return; } var signs = [ "Aries", "Taurus", "Gemini", "Cancer", "Leo", "Virgo", "Libra", "Scorpio", "Sagittarius", "Capricorn", "Aquarius", "Pisces" ]; // Each Navamsha is 3.33333333 degrees (3 deg 20 min) var navamshaPart = Math.floor(degree / 3.333333333333); if (navamshaPart > 8) navamshaPart = 8; // Boundary safety var startingSign; // Movable Signs (1, 4, 7, 10) if (signIndex == 1 || signIndex == 4 || signIndex == 7 || signIndex == 10) { startingSign = signIndex; } // Fixed Signs (2, 5, 8, 11) else if (signIndex == 2 || signIndex == 5 || signIndex == 8 || signIndex == 11) { // Starts from 9th sign from itself startingSign = (signIndex + 8); } // Dual Signs (3, 6, 9, 12) else { // Starts from 5th sign from itself startingSign = (signIndex + 4); } // Final result modulo 12 var finalSignIndex = (startingSign + navamshaPart) % 12; if (finalSignIndex == 0) finalSignIndex = 12; var resultSignName = signs[finalSignIndex – 1]; var isVargottama = (signIndex == finalSignIndex); resultDiv.style.display = "block"; output.innerHTML = "Your planet/ascendant is in the " + (navamshaPart + 1) + "º Navamsha." + "The D9 (Navamsha) Sign is: " + resultSignName + ""; var infoText = "This position corresponds to Pada " + (navamshaPart + 1) + " of the Nakshatra segment. "; if (isVargottama) { infoText += "Status: Vargottama! This planet/point is exceptionally strong as it occupies the same sign in both D1 and D9 charts."; } else { infoText += "Status: Standard placement in the D9 divisional chart."; } info.innerHTML = infoText; }

Example D9 Calculation

Suppose you have Jupiter at 15° in Leo:

  1. Leo is a Fixed Sign.
  2. For Fixed Signs, the Navamsha count begins from the 9th sign away. Counting 9 signs from Leo (Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries), we start at Aries.
  3. 15 degrees falls into the 5th Navamsha (since each part is 3°20′).
    • 1st: 0° – 3°20′
    • 2nd: 3°20′ – 6°40′
    • 3rd: 6°40′ – 10°00′
    • 4th: 10°00′ – 13°20′
    • 5th: 13°20′ – 16°40′
  4. Starting from Aries, the 5th sign is Leo.
  5. Because Jupiter is in Leo in D1 and Leo in D9, Jupiter is Vargottama.

Significance of D9 Navamsha Results
