At its heart, dimensional analysis involves multiplying a given quantity by one or more conversion factors. A conversion factor is a ratio of equivalent values expressed in different units. For example, since 1 mile is equal to 5280 feet, the ratio (5280 feet / 1 mile) is a conversion factor. Because the numerator and denominator represent the same physical quantity, the conversion factor itself is equal to 1, and multiplying by 1 does not change the value of the quantity, only its units.
How Dimensional Analysis Works for Unit Conversion
When you multiply by a conversion factor, you strategically place the units you want to cancel in the denominator and the units you want to introduce in the numerator. This process can be chained over multiple steps until you arrive at the desired final units. The units literally "cancel out" just like numbers in a fraction.
Example: Converting Miles Per Hour to Feet Per Second
Let's say you want to convert a speed of 10 miles/hour to feet/second. Here's how you'd set up the dimensional analysis:
- Start with your given quantity: 10 miles/hour
- Convert miles to feet: Multiply by (5280 feet / 1 mile). The 'miles' unit in the numerator of your starting quantity cancels with 'mile' in the denominator of the factor.
- Convert hours to minutes: Multiply by (1 hour / 60 minutes). The 'hour' unit in the denominator of your current quantity cancels with 'hour' in the numerator of the factor.
- Convert minutes to seconds: Multiply by (1 minute / 60 seconds). The 'minutes' unit in the denominator of your current quantity cancels with 'minute' in the numerator of the factor.
The full setup looks like this:
10 (miles / hour) * (5280 feet / 1 mile) * (1 hour / 60 minutes) * (1 minute / 60 seconds)
After canceling units, you are left with:
10 * 5280 / (60 * 60) (feet / seconds)
= 10 * 5280 / 3600 (feet / seconds)
= 14.6667 feet/second
