Understanding Essential Oil Dilution
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. They are potent and should rarely, if ever, be applied directly to the skin without dilution. Diluting essential oils in a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, almond oil, etc.) reduces their potency to a safe level, making them suitable for topical application and helping to spread the essential oil over a larger skin area.
The Dilution Percentage refers to the ratio of essential oil to the total volume of the mixture (carrier oil + essential oil). A common standard is the 1-3-5 rule for adults:
- 1% Dilution: Approximately 6 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce (30ml) of carrier oil. Ideal for daily facial applications or for individuals with sensitive skin.
- 2% Dilution: Approximately 12 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce (30ml) of carrier oil. A good general dilution for adults for massage and body application.
- 3% Dilution: Approximately 18 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce (30ml) of carrier oil. Suitable for acute conditions or short-term use.
How This Calculator Works
This calculator helps you determine the correct amount of essential oil (in drops) to add to a specific volume of carrier oil to achieve your desired dilution percentage. The calculation involves several steps:
- Calculate Total Volume of Essential Oil Needed (ml):
Total Essential Oil (ml) = Carrier Oil Volume (ml) * (Dilution Percentage / 100)For example, if you have 30ml of carrier oil and want a 2% dilution:
30 ml * (2 / 100) = 0.6 mlof essential oil. - Convert Essential Oil Volume to Weight (grams):
Essential oils vary in density. We use the provided density to convert the volume (ml) to weight (grams), as drop size can also vary slightly.
Essential Oil Weight (g) = Total Essential Oil (ml) * Essential Oil Density (g/ml)Using the example above with a density of 0.92 g/ml:
0.6 ml * 0.92 g/ml = 0.552 gof essential oil. - Convert Essential Oil Weight to Drops:
A common approximation is that 1 ml of essential oil contains roughly 20 drops. This can vary based on the oil and the dropper.
Number of Drops = Essential Oil Weight (g) / (1 ml * Essential Oil Density (g/ml)) * 20 drops/mlOr simplified, assuming 20 drops per ml:
Number of Drops = Total Essential Oil (ml) * 20 drops/mlContinuing the example:
0.6 ml * 20 drops/ml = 12 drops.
The calculator takes these steps into account to provide a precise number of drops for your blend. Remember that these are approximations, and the exact number of drops can vary slightly.
Important Considerations:
- Safety First: Always research the specific essential oil you are using. Some oils have contraindications or require special handling.
- Carrier Oils: Choose a carrier oil appropriate for your skin type and intended use.
- Storage: Store your diluted essential oil blends in dark glass bottles away from heat and light.
- Patch Test: Perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying more widely, especially if you have sensitive skin or are trying a new oil.
- Internal Use: This calculator is for topical (skin) application only. Do NOT ingest essential oils unless under the direct supervision of a qualified healthcare professional trained in aromatic medicine.
