Free Freight Calculation
Understanding Free Freight Thresholds
Free freight, also known as free shipping or complimentary delivery, is a popular sales strategy used by businesses to incentivize customers to make purchases. It typically involves waiving the shipping fees for an order once a certain spending threshold is met. This calculator helps you determine if your current order qualifies for free freight and what your effective shipping cost would be if it doesn't.
The core principle behind free freight is to offset the shipping cost for the customer by encouraging them to add more items to their cart. For businesses, the increased order volume and potential for higher profit margins can often outweigh the cost of the shipping.
How Free Freight Works
Businesses set a minimum order value that a customer must reach to qualify for free shipping. For example, a business might offer free freight on all orders over $250. If a customer's order total is $300, they will not be charged for shipping. However, if their order total is only $200, they will have to pay the standard shipping fee.
This calculator takes three key inputs:
- Order Total Value: The current total value of the items in your shopping cart before shipping.
- Minimum Order for Free Freight: The minimum spending required to have shipping fees waived.
- Standard Freight Cost: The regular shipping fee that applies if the free freight threshold is not met.
The calculator will then determine if you qualify for free freight. If you do, it will confirm that you've saved the standard freight cost. If you don't qualify, it will show you how much more you need to spend to reach the free freight threshold and what your total cost would be including the standard freight.
Example Calculation
Let's say you are looking to purchase items worth $180. The online store offers free freight for all orders over $250. The standard shipping cost for orders below this threshold is $20.
- Order Total Value: $180
- Minimum Order for Free Freight: $250
- Standard Freight Cost: $20
In this scenario, your order total of $180 is less than the $250 minimum for free freight. Therefore, you would not qualify for free shipping. You would need to add an additional $70 worth of items ($250 – $180) to your cart to qualify. Your total cost would be your order value ($180) plus the standard freight cost ($20), equaling $200.
