Gematria is an ancient alphanumeric system of assigning a numerical value to a word or phrase based on its letters. Originating from Hebrew tradition, this practice is used to find deeper meanings and connections between words that share the same mathematical sum.
The Primary Ciphers Explained
Our gematria calculator uses the four most common ciphers used in modern English numerology study:
- English Ordinal: The simplest cipher where A=1, B=2, C=3… Z=26. It follows the natural order of the alphabet.
- Full Reduction: Also known as Pythagorean Gematria. This system reduces every double-digit letter value to a single digit (e.g., K is the 11th letter, so 1+1=2).
- Reverse Ordinal: This system flips the alphabet, where Z=1 and A=26.
- Jewish Gematria: An English adaptation of the Latin/Hebrew system which assigns specific weights to letters (A=1, B=2, …, I=9, J=600, etc.).
English Ordinal: 10 + 5 + 19 + 21 + 19 = 74
Full Reduction: 1 + 5 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 11
