Understanding the GMAT Focus Edition Score

The GMAT Focus Edition is a streamlined version of the Graduate Management Admission Test, designed to assess critical reasoning skills relevant to business school success. It features three core sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Unlike the previous GMAT, the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) and Integrated Reasoning sections have been removed or integrated, making the exam shorter and more focused.

GMAT Focus Edition Sections and Scoring

Each of the three sections in the GMAT Focus Edition is scored individually on a scale of 60 to 90, in 1-point increments. These section scores are then combined to produce a total score, which ranges from 205 to 805, in 10-point increments. This total score is the primary metric used by business schools for admissions decisions.

• Quantitative Reasoning: This section measures your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills. It focuses on problem-solving and data sufficiency.
• Verbal Reasoning: This section assesses your ability to read and comprehend written material, reason and evaluate arguments, and correct written material to conform to standard English.
• Data Insights: This new section evaluates your ability to analyze and interpret data from multiple sources and in different formats. It combines elements of the previous Integrated Reasoning and Data Sufficiency questions, testing your data literacy.

How the GMAT Focus Score is Calculated (Estimation)

The official GMAT Focus Edition total score calculation is a proprietary and complex adaptive algorithm developed by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council). It's not a simple average or sum of your section scores. The algorithm takes into account the difficulty of the questions you answer and whether you answer them correctly, adapting in real-time to your performance.

While it cannot replicate the exact proprietary algorithm, it offers a useful way to understand how different combinations of section scores might translate into a total score within the official 205-805 range.
