Understanding Gold Value and Purity

Calculating the value of your gold requires more than just checking the daily market rate. Gold prices fluctuate constantly due to global market conditions, and the actual value of a piece depends heavily on its purity (Karat) and weight.

How Gold Purity is Measured

The term Karat (K) is used to measure the purity of gold. 24K gold is considered 100% pure (commercially 99.9%). As the Karat number decreases, it indicates that the gold is mixed with other metals like copper, silver, or zinc to increase durability.

  • 24 Karat: 99.9% Pure gold. Very soft, bright yellow.
  • 22 Karat: 91.7% Gold. Commonly used for high-end jewelry and investment coins.
  • 18 Karat: 75% Gold. Standard for fine jewelry, offering a balance of purity and strength.
  • 14 Karat: 58.3% Gold. Popular in North America for everyday jewelry wear.

Calculating Your Gold's Value

To find out how much your gold is worth today, we use a simple mathematical formula:

Value = (Weight × Current Market Rate) × (Karat / 24)

Example Calculation

If you have a 10-gram gold chain of 18K purity, and the current gold rate is $60 per gram:

  1. Find the purity ratio: 18 / 24 = 0.75
  2. Multiply weight by market rate: 10g × $60 = $600
  3. Apply purity: $600 × 0.75 = $450 total value

Weight Conversion Guide

Depending on where you are in the world, gold might be measured differently. Here are common conversions used in our calculator:

  • 1 Ounce (Troy): ~31.1035 grams
  • 1 Tola: ~11.66 grams
  • 1 Kilogram: 1,000 grams

Note: This calculator provides an estimate based on spot prices. When selling gold, jewelers or refineries usually charge a fee or pay slightly below spot price to cover refining costs.
