Understanding the 2022 Government Mileage Rate Mid-Year Increase
The 2022 tax year was unique because the IRS issued a rare mid-year adjustment to the standard mileage rates. This was primarily driven by the significant increase in fuel prices during the first half of the year. To ensure accurate tax deductions, taxpayers must separate their 2022 mileage into two distinct periods.
2022 Mileage Rate Breakdown
Below are the specific rates used by the 2022 calculator to determine your total reimbursement or deduction:
| Category | Jan 1 – June 30 | July 1 – Dec 31 |
|---|---|---|
| Business | 58.5 cents | 62.5 cents |
| Medical/Moving | 18 cents | 22 cents |
| Charitable | 14 cents | 14 cents |
Example Calculation
If you drove for business purposes in 2022, here is how the math works for a typical freelancer or small business owner:
- Period 1: 1,000 miles x $0.585 = $585.00
- Period 2: 1,000 miles x $0.625 = $625.00
- Total 2022 Deduction: $1,210.00
Who can use the 2022 Standard Mileage Rate?
Taxpayers generally have the choice between using the standard mileage rate or tracking actual expenses (such as gas, oil, repairs, and insurance). To use the standard mileage rate for 2022, you must have chosen this method during the first year the vehicle was available for business use. For personal use, such as medical travel or moving for active-duty military, the rates also increased by 4 cents per mile mid-year to account for rising costs.
Note: Charitable mileage is set by statute and remained at 14 cents per mile for the entire duration of 2022.
