How is GPA Calculated?
The calculation of GPA involves a weighted average. Each course grade is assigned a numerical value (grade point), and this value is multiplied by the number of credit hours (or units) the course is worth. The sum of these weighted grade points is then divided by the total number of credit hours attempted.
The general formula is:
GPA = (Sum of [Grade Points × Credit Hours]) / (Total Credit Hours)
Most grading systems use a 4.0 scale, where 'A' typically corresponds to 4 grade points, 'B' to 3, 'C' to 2, 'D' to 1, and 'F' to 0. However, variations exist, such as +/- grades (e.g., A-, B+) which have intermediate point values (e.g., 3.7, 3.3). Institutions provide a specific "grading scale" or "grade point table" that outlines these values.
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Determine Grade Points for Each Course: Look up the numerical value assigned to the letter grade you received in each course (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0).
- Identify Credit Hours: Note the number of credit hours or units each course is worth. This is usually found on your transcript or course catalog.
- Calculate Quality Points: For each course, multiply its grade points by its credit hours. This gives you the "quality points" for that course. (Example: A 3-credit course with a B (3.0) grade earns 3.0 × 3 = 9.0 quality points).
- Sum Quality Points: Add up the quality points for all courses you have taken.
- Sum Credit Hours: Add up the total credit hours for all courses.
- Calculate GPA: Divide the total sum of quality points by the total sum of credit hours.
Example:
Let's say you've taken three courses:
- Course 1: 3 Credits, Grade: A (4.0)
- Course 2: 4 Credits, Grade: B (3.0)
- Course 3: 3 Credits, Grade: C+ (2.3)
Calculations:
- Course 1 Quality Points: 4.0 × 3 Credits = 12.0
- Course 2 Quality Points: 3.0 × 4 Credits = 12.0
- Course 3 Quality Points: 2.3 × 3 Credits = 6.9
Total Quality Points: 12.0 + 12.0 + 6.9 = 30.9
Total Credit Hours: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Your GPA: 30.9 / 10 = 3.09
