It is distinct from the spindle speed, which is the rotational speed of the cutting tool or workpiece, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Factors Influencing Feed Rate:
- Spindle Speed (RPM): The speed at which the tool rotates.
- Feed Per Tooth (FPT): The amount of material each cutting edge of the tool removes as it rotates. This is a primary determinant of chip load.
- Number of Teeth on Cutter: The number of cutting edges present on a milling cutter or similar tool.
- Material Properties: The hardness and machinability of the workpiece material.
- Tool Material and Geometry: The type of cutting tool, its sharpness, and its design.
- Machining Operation: Whether it's roughing, finishing, drilling, etc.
- Machine Rigidity: The stability and power of the machine tool.
The Calculation Formula:
The most common formula for calculating the feed rate, especially in milling operations, is:
Feed Rate (units/minute) = Spindle Speed (RPM) × Feed Per Tooth (units/tooth) × Number of Teeth on Cutter
This formula essentially combines the rotational speed with how much material is removed per cutting edge to determine the linear speed of advancement.
