Understanding and Calculating Parlay Odds
A parlay bet is a single wager that links together two or more individual bets, known as "legs." For the parlay to win, every single leg within the parlay must be successful. If even one leg fails, the entire parlay loses. The appeal of parlays lies in their potential for significantly higher payouts compared to individual straight bets, as the odds of each leg are multiplied together.
How Parlay Odds Are Calculated
Calculating parlay odds is straightforward once you understand the concept of decimal odds. The combined odds of a parlay are determined by multiplying the decimal odds of each individual leg. This calculator specifically uses decimal odds for input, as they are the easiest format for multiplication.
Converting Odds Formats to Decimal:
- American Odds:
- Positive Odds (+): If the odds are +X (e.g., +200), the formula is
(X / 100) + 1. So, +200 becomes (200/100) + 1 = 3.00. - Negative Odds (-): If the odds are -X (e.g., -150), the formula is
(100 / X) + 1. So, -150 becomes (100/150) + 1 = 1.67.
- Positive Odds (+): If the odds are +X (e.g., +200), the formula is
- Fractional Odds: If the odds are A/B (e.g., 5/2), the formula is
(A / B) + 1. So, 5/2 becomes (5/2) + 1 = 3.50.
The Calculation Process:
- Convert All Legs to Decimal Odds: Ensure every individual bet's odds are in decimal format.
- Multiply Decimal Odds: Multiply the decimal odds of each leg together. The result is the combined decimal odds for your parlay.
- Calculate Potential Payout: Multiply the combined decimal odds by your initial stake to find your total potential payout (including your original stake).
- Determine Net Profit: Subtract your initial stake from the potential payout to find your net profit.
Example Calculation:
Let's say you want to place a $10 parlay bet with three legs:
- Leg 1: Team A to win at 1.80 decimal odds
- Leg 2: Team B to win at 2.10 decimal odds
- Leg 3: Team C to win at 1.95 decimal odds
Here's how the calculation works:
- Combined Decimal Odds: 1.80 * 2.10 * 1.95 = 7.371
- Potential Payout: $10 (Stake) * 7.371 (Combined Odds) = $73.71
- Net Profit: $73.71 (Payout) – $10 (Stake) = $63.71
If all three teams win, your $10 stake would return a total of $73.71, giving you a profit of $63.71.
Using the Parlay Odds Calculator:
Our calculator simplifies this process. Simply enter your initial stake and the decimal odds for each leg of your parlay. You can enter up to five legs. If you have fewer than five, leave the unused input fields blank. The calculator will automatically multiply the valid odds and display your combined parlay odds, potential total payout, and net profit.
Remember, while parlays offer exciting potential returns, they also carry higher risk. The more legs you add, the higher the odds, but also the lower the probability of all legs winning.
