Understanding How to Calculate Square Feet for Flooring
Accurately calculating the square footage required for a flooring project is a crucial step in ensuring you buy enough material without overspending on excess. The Basic Formula: Area = Length × Width
The fundamental calculation for determining the area of a rectangular or square space is to multiply its length by its width. Both measurements should be in the same units (feet, in this case) to yield the area in square feet.
- Length: Measure the longest dimension of your room from one wall to the opposite wall.

12 feet × 10 feet = 120 square feet

- Calculate the basic square footage (Length × Width).
- Determine the waste amount:
Basic Square Footage × (Waste Percentage / 100) - Add the waste amount to the basic square footage:
Total Square Footage = Basic Square Footage + Waste Amount
Alternatively, you can calculate it directly:
Total Square Footage = Basic Square Footage × (1 + (Waste Percentage / 100))
Using our previous example of a 120 sq ft room and adding a 10% waste factor:
Waste Amount = 120 sq ft × (10 / 100) = 12 sq ft
Total Square Footage = 120 sq ft + 12 sq ft = 132 square feet
Or directly: 120 sq ft × (1 + 0.10) = 120 sq ft × 1.10 = 132 square feet
Irregular Room Shapes
If your room isn't a simple rectangle, break it down into smaller rectangular or square sections. Measure each section's length and width, calculate its square footage, and then sum up the areas of all sections to get the total square footage for the room. Always remember to add your waste factor to this grand total.
