Post Engagement Rate
How to Calculate Instagram Engagement Rate Per Post
Calculating the engagement rate for a specific Instagram post is the best way to determine what type of content resonates with your audience. Unlike an account-wide average, the per post engagement rate identifies individual successes and failures.
The Formula
To calculate engagement rate per post, we use the following formula:
Example Calculation
Imagine you have 10,000 followers and you post a photo that receives:
- Saves: 15
Step 1: Add interactions: 450 + 30 + 15 + 5 = 500 total interactions.
Step 2: Divide by followers: 500 / 10,000 = 0.05.
Step 3: Multiply by 100: 0.05 x 100 = 5% Engagement Rate.
Followers vs. Reach: Which should you use?
In our calculator, you can enter either your follower count or your reach. Here is the difference:
- Follower-based Rate: This is the standard for influencer marketing and public benchmarking. It tells you how much of your total "potential" audience engaged.
- Reach-based Rate: This is an internal metric. It tells you what percentage of people who actually saw the post decided to interact. This is often more accurate for judging content quality, as the Instagram algorithm doesn't show your post to all your followers.
What is a good Instagram Engagement Rate in 2024?
Engagement rates vary significantly by industry and account size, but general benchmarks are:
| Rate Range | Performance |
|---|---|
| Below 1% | Low (Needs improvement) |
| 1% – 3% | Average / Good |
| 3% – 6% | High |
| Above 6% | Very High / Viral Potential |
Tips to Increase Your Post Engagement
- Write Compelling Captions: Ask a question or include a clear Call to Action (CTA).
- Use Carousels: Statistics show that Instagram Carousels (multiple images) often have higher engagement rates than single photos.
- Reply to Comments: Engaging with your audience in the first hour after posting can boost the post's visibility.
- Time Your Posts: Use your Instagram Insights to find when your followers are most active.
