Resting Heart Rate Checker
Understanding Your Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute while you are at complete rest. It is a vital indicator of your cardiovascular fitness and overall health. Generally, a lower RHR implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness.
What is a "Normal" Range?
For most healthy adults, a normal resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute (BPM). However, many factors can influence this number, including:
- Physical Activity: Athletes often have RHRs in the 40s or 50s.
- Temperature: Heart rates may rise slightly in high heat and humidity.
- Emotions: Stress, anxiety, or extreme happiness can increase your BPM.
- Body Position: Resting while standing vs. lying down can cause a slight difference.
- Medication: Beta-blockers can slow the heart, while some thyroid medications can speed it up.
How to Measure Your Pulse Accurately
To get the most accurate reading for this calculator, follow these steps:
- Do not measure within one hour of exercise or consuming caffeine.
- Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes before checking.
- Place two fingers (not your thumb) on your wrist (radial artery) or the side of your neck (carotid artery).
- Count the beats for 60 seconds, or count for 30 seconds and multiply by 2.
When to See a Doctor
While this calculator provides general guidelines, you should consult a healthcare professional if:
- Your resting heart rate is consistently above 100 BPM (Tachycardia).
- Your resting heart rate is below 60 BPM and you are not an athlete (Bradycardia).
- You experience palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
