Monitor Size Calculator
Use this calculator to determine the exact width, height, and screen area of a monitor based on its diagonal measurement and aspect ratio. This is useful for planning desk space, comparing different monitor sizes, or understanding screen real estate.

When you buy a monitor, its size is almost always advertised by its diagonal measurement in inches. For example, a "27-inch monitor" refers to the distance from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. However, this single number doesn't tell you the full story about the monitor's physical dimensions or how much screen real estate you actually get.
This is where the aspect ratio comes in. The aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and the height of the screen. It's typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9, 21:9, 4:3).
- 16:9 (Widescreen): This is the most common aspect ratio for modern monitors and TVs. It's ideal for watching movies, gaming, and general productivity, offering a good balance between width and height.
- 21:9 (Ultrawide): These monitors are significantly wider than 16:9 screens, offering an immersive experience for gaming and excellent multitasking capabilities, allowing you to view multiple windows side-by-side without needing a second monitor.
- 4:3 (Standard): Once the standard for older CRT monitors and early LCDs, 4:3 screens are squarer. While less common now, they can still be found in some specialized applications or older setups.
- 16:10: A slightly taller widescreen format than 16:9, offering a bit more vertical space which can be beneficial for productivity tasks like coding or document editing.
Why Calculate Monitor Dimensions?
Knowing the exact width and height of a monitor is crucial for several reasons:
- Desk Space Planning: Before purchasing, you can measure your desk to ensure the monitor will fit comfortably, especially if you're considering a large ultrawide screen or a multi-monitor setup.
- Ergonomics: Understanding the physical size helps you determine optimal viewing distance and monitor arm placement for ergonomic comfort.
- Comparison: A 27-inch 16:9 monitor will have different actual dimensions than a 27-inch 4:3 monitor. This calculator helps you compare the true screen real estate.
- Content Creation: For graphic designers, video editors, or architects, knowing precise dimensions can be important for visualizing how content will appear.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses the Pythagorean theorem, which states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the diagonal in this case) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides (width and height). By knowing the diagonal and the ratio of the width to the height, we can solve for the individual width and height measurements.
For example, a 27-inch monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio is not simply 16 inches wide and 9 inches tall. The calculator takes the diagonal measurement and the aspect ratio to accurately determine the true width, height, and total screen area, giving you a complete picture of your monitor's physical size.
