Understanding Overtime Calculation in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, overtime (OT) is primarily governed by the Shop and Office Employees Act No. 19 of 1954 and various Wages Boards. For most private-sector employees in offices or retail shops, the standard calculation is based on a 45-hour work week.
The Formula for OT Calculation
To calculate your overtime payment, follow these steps:
- Total Salary: Combine your Basic Salary and any fixed allowances (like the Budgetary Relief Allowance).
- Hourly Rate: Divide the Total Salary by the standard divisor (usually 200 for Shop and Office employees).
- OT Rate: Multiply the Hourly Rate by 1.5 (as OT is paid at 150% of the normal hourly rate).
- Total OT Pay: Multiply the OT Rate by the number of extra hours worked.
Example Calculation:
Basic Salary + Allowance: 60,000 LKR
Hourly Rate: 60,000 / 200 = 300 LKR/hour
OT Rate: 300 * 1.5 = 450 LKR/hour
For 10 OT Hours: 450 * 10 = 4,500 LKR
Basic Salary + Allowance: 60,000 LKR
Hourly Rate: 60,000 / 200 = 300 LKR/hour
OT Rate: 300 * 1.5 = 450 LKR/hour
For 10 OT Hours: 450 * 10 = 4,500 LKR
Key Legal Limitations
- Under the Shop and Office Act, total OT hours cannot exceed 12 hours per week.
- Employees working on a statutory holiday are generally entitled to double the normal rate or a substitute holiday.
- The standard divisor of 200 is derived from 25 working days a month at 8 hours per day.
