Example: If you earn an annual salary of $60,000 and are paid bi-weekly, your gross pay per period would be $60,000 / 26 = $2,307.69. If you earn $25 per hour and work 40 hours a week, your annual gross pay would be $25 * 40 * 52 = $52,000.
What is Net Pay?
Net pay, often referred to as "take-home pay," is the amount of money an employee receives after all mandatory and voluntary deductions have been subtracted from their gross pay. This is the actual amount that gets deposited into your bank account or paid via check.
Common Payroll Deductions Explained
Several types of deductions are typically taken from your gross pay. These can be categorized into mandatory deductions (taxes) and voluntary deductions (benefits, retirement contributions).
Mandatory Deductions (Taxes):
- Federal Income Tax: This is a tax levied by the U.S. federal government on an individual's income. The amount withheld depends on your income level, filing status, and the allowances you claim on your W-4 form. Our calculator uses a percentage estimate for simplicity.
- State Income Tax: Most states also levy an income tax. The rates and rules vary significantly by state. Some states have no income tax, while others have flat rates or progressive tax brackets.
- Social Security Tax (FICA): Part of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA), Social Security tax funds benefits for retirees, the disabled, and survivors. The current employee contribution rate is 6.2% of your gross wages, up to an annual wage base limit (which changes annually). For simplicity, our calculator applies this rate to all gross pay.
- Medicare Tax (FICA): Also part of FICA, Medicare tax funds health insurance for individuals aged 65 or older, and for certain younger people with disabilities. The current employee contribution rate is 1.45% of all gross wages, with no wage base limit.
Voluntary Deductions:
These are deductions you authorize your employer to take from your paycheck, often for benefits or savings plans.
- Health Insurance Premiums: Your share of the cost for health, dental, or vision insurance plans.
- Retirement Contributions (e.g., 401k, 403b): Money you contribute to your retirement savings plan. These are often pre-tax, meaning they reduce your taxable income.
