How Much Raw Food Should You Feed Your Dog?
Switching to a raw food diet is one of the best choices you can make for your dog's health. However, precision is key. A balanced raw diet ensures your dog gets the necessary nutrients, minerals, and vitamins without the fillers found in commercial kibble.
The Basic Formulas
The standard rule of thumb for an adult dog is to feed 2.5% of their ideal adult body weight per day. This varies based on activity level:
- 2% (Low activity): Senior dogs or those with a very sedentary lifestyle.
- 2.5% (Standard): Most healthy adult dogs with moderate daily walks.
- 3% to 4% (Active): Working dogs, sporting dogs, or those needing to gain weight.
- Up to 10% (Puppies): Growing puppies require significantly more food relative to their body weight to support development.
BARF vs. PMR Models
Our calculator supports the two most common raw feeding methodologies:
- BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food): This model typically follows a 70/10/10/10 ratio—70% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% liver, 5% other organs, and 10% vegetables/fruit.
- PMR (Prey Model Raw): This mimics the composition of a whole prey animal without plant matter. The standard ratio is 80% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% liver, and 5% other secreting organs.
Example Calculation
If you have a 20kg dog at a 2.5% feeding rate using the BARF model:
- Total Daily: 500g
- Muscle Meat (70%): 350g
- Raw Bone (10%): 50g
- Liver (5%): 25g
- Other Organs (5%): 25g
- Veggies (10%): 50g
