Variables

  • GCC (Government Constructed Cost): The estimated cost the government would pay a commercial carrier to move your weight.
  • 95% Rule: Service members are paid 95% of the GCC for a PPM.
  • Net Weight: The difference between your full and empty weight tickets.
  • MALT (Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation): Mileage reimbursement for driving your own vehicle ($0.22/mile in 2024).

What is a Military DITY Move?

A DITY move, now officially called a Personally Procured Move (PPM), is a program offered by the Department of Defense that allows service members to move their household goods themselves rather than having the government arrange a commercial carrier.

The primary incentive for a PPM is the potential for profit. If you can move your belongings for less than the 95% government reimbursement rate, you get to keep the difference as taxable income. This calculator helps you estimate that ceiling before you rent a truck.

How to Calculate Military DITY Move (Example)

Suppose you are moving 7,000 lbs over 1,000 miles.

  1. Find GCC: If the government rate is $1.20 per lb for that distance, GCC = $8,400.
  2. Apply 95%: $8,400 × 0.95 = $7,980.
  3. Add MALT: 1,000 miles × $0.22 = $220.
  4. Total Estimate: $7,980 + $220 = $8,200.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the DITY move profit taxable?

Yes. Any reimbursement amount that exceeds your actual qualified moving expenses is considered taxable income and will be reported on a W-2.

What weight tickets do I need?

You must obtain a “certified empty weight ticket” and a “certified full weight ticket” from a certified scale (like CAT scales) for every vehicle or trailer used.

Can I do a partial DITY move?

Absolutely. You can have the government move most of your items while you move a portion (like high-value items or essentials) yourself to earn extra cash.

How is GCC calculated?

GCC is based on the “Best Value” rate for the specific lane (route) and weight bracket, which changes seasonally. This calculator uses a standard average rate for estimation.
