To use this tool, measure the length and width of your area in feet. Then, determine your desired depth. For most walkways, 2 to 3 inches is standard, while driveways usually require 4 to 6 inches for stability.
The Gravel Calculation Formula
The math behind our calculator follows standard industry practices for landscaping and construction:
- Calculate Square Footage: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square Feet.
- Convert Depth: Depth (inches) / 12 = Depth in Feet.
- Calculate Cubic Feet: Square Feet × Depth (ft) = Cubic Feet.
- Convert to Cubic Yards: Cubic Feet / 27 = Cubic Yards.
- Convert to Tonnage: Cubic Yards × Material Density (approx. 1.4 for gravel) = Total Tons.
Example Calculation:
If you have a driveway that is 30 feet long and 10 feet wide, and you want to fill it 4 inches deep:
• 30′ x 10′ = 300 sq ft.
• 4″ is 0.33 feet.
• 300 x 0.33 = 100 cubic feet.
• 100 / 27 = 3.7 cubic yards.
• 3.7 x 1.4 = 5.18 tons.
