Understanding Parlay Odds and Calculations
A parlay is a type of sports bet that combines two or more individual wagers (called "legs") into a single bet. For the parlay to win, every leg must win. The main appeal of parlays is their potential for high payouts, as the odds of each leg multiply together, creating a significantly larger return than placing each bet individually.
How Parlay Odds are Calculated
The calculation of parlay odds depends on the format of the individual leg odds. The fundamental principle is that the payout for each winning leg rolls over into the next leg, increasing the potential return.
1. Decimal Odds (European Odds)
Decimal odds are straightforward to work with for parlays. To find the total decimal odds of a parlay, you simply multiply the decimal odds of each individual leg together.
Total Decimal Odds = Leg 1 Odds × Leg 2 Odds × ... × Leg N Odds
The potential profit is then calculated as:
Profit = (Total Decimal Odds × Stake) - Stake
Or, the total payout (stake + profit) is:
Total Payout = Total Decimal Odds × Stake
2. American Odds (Moneyline Odds)
American odds can be positive (+) or negative (-). Negative odds indicate the favorite (how much you need to bet to win $100), and positive odds indicate the underdog (how much you win if you bet $100).
- For odds greater than +100: Convert to decimal by dividing the odds by 100 and adding 1.
Decimal Odds = (American Odds / 100) + 1 - For odds less than -100: Convert to decimal by dividing 100 by the absolute value of the odds and adding 1.
Decimal Odds = (100 / abs(American Odds)) + 1
Once all legs are converted to decimal odds, you can calculate the total parlay decimal odds by multiplying them together, as described above.
3. Fractional Odds (UK Odds)
Fractional odds, like 5/1, represent the profit relative to the stake. To convert fractional odds to decimal odds, use the formula:
Decimal Odds = (Numerator / Denominator) + 1
For example, 5/1 odds become (5/1) + 1 = 6.00 in decimal.
How the Calculator Works
This calculator simplifies the process. You enter the number of legs, the odds format, the odds for each leg, and your stake. It automatically converts all odds to a common format (decimal) for calculation, multiplies them to get the total parlay odds, and then calculates the potential profit and total payout based on your stake.
Use Cases for Parlays
- Maximizing Potential Payouts: When you have high confidence in multiple outcomes, a parlay can significantly increase your potential winnings.
- Entertainment Value: The thrill of a large potential payout makes parlays a popular choice for recreational bettors.
- Combining Seemingly Small Advantages: If you have several small edges on different games, combining them into a parlay can create a more substantial bet with higher potential returns.
