Understanding Your Georgia Paycheck Calculation

3. Georgia State Income Tax Withholding
Georgia has a progressive income tax system. Withholding is determined by your gross pay, your filing status, and the number of allowances claimed on your Georgia G-4 form. Georgia uses tax tables to calculate the amount to withhold. This calculator uses a simplified model based on Georgia's tax rates and standard deductions, adjusted for allowances.
4. Social Security Tax
This tax is 6.2% of your gross income, up to an annual wage base limit. For 2024, the limit is $168,600. This tax funds retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
5. Medicare Tax
This tax is 1.45% of your gross income. There is no wage limit for Medicare tax. This tax funds the federal health insurance program.
6. Other Deductions
These are voluntary deductions you elect to have taken from your paycheck. Common examples include contributions to retirement plans (like 401(k) or 403(b)), health insurance premiums, life insurance premiums, and union dues. These deductions reduce your taxable income for income tax purposes (though Social Security and Medicare taxes are generally calculated on gross pay before these deductions, except for pre-tax retirement contributions).
