Understanding the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for 2024 & 2025
The Child Tax Credit is one of the most significant tax benefits for families in the United States. It is designed to help working parents offset the costs of raising children. For the 2024 and 2025 tax years, the credit remains a vital tool for reducing your overall federal tax liability.
How Much is the Credit?
The standard Child Tax Credit is currently $2,000 per qualifying child under the age of 17. Additionally, a non-refundable credit of $500 is available for "Other Dependents," which includes children over 17 or elderly parents living with you.
Income Limits and Phase-Outs
The credit is subject to income limits. The phase-out begins when your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) exceeds:
- $400,000 for Married Filing Jointly
- $200,000 for all other filing statuses
For every $1,000 (or fraction thereof) earned above these thresholds, the credit is reduced by $50.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the $2,000 credit, the child must:
- Be under age 17 at the end of the tax year.
- Be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or a descendant of these.
- Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN).
- Have lived with you for more than half the year.
- Be claimed as a dependent on your tax return.
Example Calculation
If a married couple earns $120,000 and has two children under 17, they would qualify for the full $4,000 credit ($2,000 x 2). Since their income is well below the $400,000 threshold, no phase-out occurs.
