South Korean Won (KRW) Converter
Understanding the South Korean Won (KRW) and Exchange Rates
Whether you are planning a trip to Seoul, purchasing goods from a Korean online retailer, or conducting international business, understanding how to convert your home currency into South Korean Won (KRW) is essential. The Won is the official currency of South Korea, indicated by the symbol ₩ and the ISO code KRW.
Why You Need a KRW Exchange Rate Calculator
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly due to global economic conditions, interest rate changes by central banks (like the Bank of Korea or the US Federal Reserve), and geopolitical events. Because the Won often trades in large numerical denominations compared to Western currencies (e.g., $1 USD is often equivalent to over ₩1,300 KRW), doing the math in your head can be difficult and prone to errors.
This calculator is designed to provide a quick and easy estimation of how much KRW you will receive for a specific amount of foreign currency based on a rate you provide.
How to Use This Calculator
This tool requires two simple inputs to calculate the conversion:
- Amount to Convert (Foreign Currency): Enter the total amount of your base currency you wish to exchange. For example, if you have 500 US Dollars, enter
500. - Current Exchange Rate (KRW per 1 Unit): Enter the current market rate indicating how many Won you get for one unit of your currency. If the current rate is 1 USD to 1,355.50 KRW, enter
1355.50.
Once you click "Calculate KRW Amount," the tool will multiply your source amount by the rate to give you the total estimated Won. The output is rounded to the nearest whole number, as subunits of the Won (jeon) are no longer used in everyday cash transactions.
Example Calculation
Let's say a traveler from Europe wants to convert Euros to Won for a vacation in Busan.
- Source Amount: 1,200 EUR
- Exchange Rate: The traveler checks a financial news site and sees the EUR/KRW rate is 1,450.25.
By inputting these figures into the calculator, the calculation would be: 1200 * 1450.25 = 1,740,300.
The result is 1,740,300 ₩.
Note: Keep in mind that the rates shown on financial news sites are often "mid-market rates." Banks and currency exchange kiosks will typically add a spread or commission fee, meaning the actual amount of Won you receive may be slightly lower than the calculator's estimation.
